Behesht: A Sustainable Commercial Complex

A Landmark Design by Mohammad Aliabadi

Behesht is an official commercial complex that showcases sustainable architectural approaches and aims to improve the sociability of urban spaces. Designed by Mohammad Aliabadi, this project combines environmentally responsible strategies with a focus on urban context and accessibility.

Behesht stands out as a unique and sustainable building that integrates seamlessly with its urban surroundings. The main inspiration behind this project was the desire to create a structure that utilizes natural energies effectively. To achieve this, sustainable materials were used, along with large windows that allow for ample natural light. The result is a building that not only reduces its environmental impact but also enhances the street life of the area.

What sets Behesht apart is its commitment to urban design principles. The project considers the unique lifestyle of the citizens, regional materials, and the preservation of valuable views. It also embraces Transfer Oriented Development and ensures accessibility for all, including people with disabilities. By addressing these key concepts, Behesht becomes more than just a commercial complex; it becomes an urban catalyst and a development stimulus for the city.

The realization of Behesht involved the use of post-tension concrete structure, along with materials such as tent sunshade, insulating bricks, larch wood, reinforced concrete, and stone. The building features large windows on two sides, allowing for a connection with the surrounding environment.

With a site area of 989 sq. m. and a built area of 4991 sq. m., Behesht comprises six floors, including three underground levels for parking and trading centers. The ground floor and the two floors above it house offices and other trade centers. The design of the pedestrian ways and the front space was carefully considered to create an efficient place for communication and social activities. Behesht has become a landmark in Shiraz, positively influencing the development of its neighborhood.

The design process for Behesht began in 2015, with construction starting in 2016 and completion in January 2017. Located in Shiraz, Iran, this project required extensive research and analysis of the urban context. The designers employed various methods, such as questionnaires, interviews, and photography, to understand the needs and desires of the citizens. This research was instrumental in creating a responsible building that caters to the requirements of a good public place.

Overcoming challenges was an integral part of the design process for Behesht. Finding the right structure for participating in an urban development project, where citizens are considered investors and interact with governmental associations, was a significant hurdle. Additionally, creating a truly green building with functional considerations posed its own set of challenges. However, the designers successfully navigated these obstacles to bring Behesht to life.

Behesht has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2018. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

Behesht is a testament to the power of sustainable architecture and urban design. With its unique features and commitment to environmental responsibility, it serves as a model for future commercial complexes.
